Electricity price increases in April 2024: Time to take action

It's official: Electricity prices are set to increase. After some providers lowered their prices last year, the discount will be revoked starting from April.

What's behind this?

The federal government is tightening its belt and cutting subsidies to relieve the budget by a whopping 17 billion euros. These measures also affect electricity customers as the subsidy for transmission network operators is being withdrawn.

The effects are noticeable: Electricity prices are expected to rise by an average of 6.43 cents per kilowatt-hour. For a single household, this means an increase of approximately 96.45 euros per year, while a family with a consumption of 4000 kilowatt-hours can expect an additional burden of 257.20 euros.

But why only from April?

Price adjustments must be announced six weeks in advance, which means they only take effect in April.

The good news is that there are ways to counteract these price increases. A key step is to search for a cheaper electricity tariff.

But how do you find one?

The answer lies in using Comparison Portals and consulting consumer advice centers. Comparison portals on the internet provide an easy way to compare the tariffs of different providers and find the cheapest one for your needs. By entering basic information, you'll receive a list of the best offers in your region. Consumer advice centers are also valuable resources for finding not only cheap providers but also tips on efficient energy use.

Switching to a cheaper provider is straightforward and can be done in a few steps. By providing your annual electricity consumption and considering contract conditions such as contract terms and price guarantees, you can make a switch. The new provider usually takes care of canceling the contract with the previous supplier, and in case of price increases, there is even a special right to terminate the contract.

It's worth taking a close look and checking the contract terms. Switching providers can not only bring short-term savings but also be beneficial in the long run.

By taking action now, you can outsmart the rising electricity prices and keep your expenses under control.
